A gloved fist is still a fist
The newest revision of the U.S. customs “entities list” went into effect on August 3rd. On August 5th, the Chinese government prohibited Chinese citizens and organizations from any association with entities on their own list. News reports following this discuss the conflict between the U.S.’s policy to limit imports and the Chinese government’s intention to defend their exports, with the controversies revolving on questions of the Chinese government’s interventions in Xinjiang.
Yet, this misses one of the most profound developments. The inclusion of the Responsible Business Alliance on the Chinese entities list implies consequences beyond cotton, the rights of ethnic minorities and even the issue of forced employment.
